Before and After Gallery of Photos

BEFORE: This client had a sunny and exposed site that he wanted to see filled with colour and easy to care for perennials that could be enjoyed with a minimum amount of maintenance.

PLANTING: The bed is filled with hardy long-flowering or otherwise colourful plants which are also drought tolerant. The thick layer of mulch was addded to help keep down the weeds and trap in moisture, reducing the need for watering. Filigran' Russian Sage, Maestro and Postman's Pride Sedums, Elijah Blue Fescue, Polychrome Spurge are all visible in the foreground.

AFTER: 3 months after planting we're treated to a second flush of flowers from the Chandelier Lupine beside the silver foliage of the Butterfly Heaven Butterfly Bush. In the foreground, the California Fuscia is covered in small red flowers and the Rhapsody in Blue Salvia in the background is still in full bloom.

BEFORE: This project involved planting an area that had been dug up for a geo-thermal heating installation. The site was an area between a forest and the client's home and existing gardens. The area was prepared for planting by clearing away debris and adding a thick layer of topsoil.

PRIOR TO PLANTING: Shade-tolerant native plants were chosen for their ability to carpet the area without posing a threat to the adjacent forest should they spread in the future. Here we see Wild ginger and Running Strawberry Bush, with Blue-stemmed Goldenrod in the background.

AFTER: Existing rocks were used to line the new garden area and a wide space was left for a natural foot path. 10 months after planting 4 yards of cedar mulch were spread around the plantings.

Less Than A Year After Planting: Native plants are thriving, the heart shaped leaves of Wild Ginger are on the right of the path, and plumes of Ostrich ferns are rising up from the left edge of the planting.

PHLOX: Woodland Phlox putting on a spectacular show of purple.

BEFORE: This garden was overgrown with enthusiastic day lilies which require frequent dividing to keep them their size in check. A mixture of plants with a variety of heights, colours and textures was called for in order to reflect more favorably on the owners home run business.

AFTER: The day lilies were divided and spread to other areas of the garden to use as fill until the new shrubs and perennials grow to full size. Here they surround a Rose Glow Barberry whose mottled leaves provide interest from spring through to fall.

AFTER: New plants were chosen for their ability to thrive without extra watering once established, and for the variety of colours from both leaves and flower. Here we see Rose Glow Barberry planted where it will mask the corner of the house and downspout. Asiatic lilies grow tall against the brick wall, and in the foreground spiky tufts of Elijah Blue Fescue contrast with the round leaves of Maestro Sedum and Polychroma Spurge which, shortly after planting already add a splash of colour.

MULCH: A thick layer of Black Beauty cedar mulch carpets the entire garden. The dark colour was chosen for its soil-like appearance, so as to not draw any attention away from the plants.

BEFORE: When this client returned to work after years of being a stay at home mom, she found her once beautiful gardens too much to care for. We worked together to cut back the overgrown garden by reducing the size of the beds, adding to the lawn, planting easy to care for shrubs, and installing a brick border that would allow for easy mowing right up to its edge.

AFTER: Here we see the cleaned up garden in the fall with the brick border around a Paper Birch and Mugho Pine. The Mugho was pruned to open up its base and show off it's form while creating space for low growing perennials or annuals around it's base.

BEFORE: This urban back yard garden was in need of clean-up. It had become overgrown with thriving plants and a few simple changes were all that were needed to give it a refreshed look.

AFTER: Most existing plants were moved within the garden bed and the addition of a few choice perennials provide new interest. Hostas were divided and repositioned to maximize the contrast between varieties, woodland asters were transplanted to circle the base of the Pear tree and Sedums were kept for fall interest. The addition of a trio of Pewter Veil Coral Bells adds summer long colour, while the planting of few unique perennials along the stepping stone path leave something to be discovered by wonderers through the garden.
